PopcornPact Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 28, 2026
PopcornPact ("PopcornPact", "we", "us") is a movie-matching app that helps
you and your friends find something to watch together. This policy
explains what information PopcornPact collects, how it's used, and the
choices you have. PopcornPact is currently developed and operated by an
independent developer, not a company.
Information we collect
What's collected depends on how you sign in:
-
Signing in with Plex or Trakt: your username, avatar
image, and account ID from that service, plus an authorization token we
use to act on your behalf (for example, syncing your watchlist). We
never see or store your Plex or Trakt password.
-
Signing in with Google or Apple: the name, email
address, and account identifier that service shares with us to verify
your identity. We never see or store your Google or Apple password.
-
Signing in with email: just your email address, used to
send a one-time sign-in code. We don't store a password.
-
Continuing as a guest: a random identifier generated on
your device (not tied to your name, email, or any account) and the
display name you choose. This exists only so the app recognizes you the
next time you open it.
Once you're signed in, PopcornPact also stores:
-
The movies you mark as "want to watch," "seen," or "not interested," and
any custom lists — this is how the matching feature works.
- Your streaming service and filter preferences.
-
If you choose to connect your own Plex, Emby, or Jellyfin server: that
server's address and an access token, stored so PopcornPact can read
your library and viewing history from your own server. This is entirely
optional and only used to access your own server.
-
If you add friends: an invite code system links your accounts so matches
can be computed. If you choose to, you can also share access to your
personal media server with a specific friend so PopcornPact can include
your shared library in your matches together.
How we use your information
- To show you movies and compute matches with your friends.
-
To optionally sync your watch activity back to your own Plex or Trakt
account, if you've connected one and enabled that sync.
-
To personalize recommendations based on your ratings and streaming
services.
When you match with a friend, only the movies you
both independently marked "want to watch" are shown to each
other. Your full swipe history, seen list, and pass list are never visible
to anyone but you.
Third-party services
-
The Movie Database (TMDb): PopcornPact's movie catalog,
posters, and metadata come from TMDb. Only search/filter parameters are
sent to TMDb — never your personal information.
-
Plex and Trakt: if you sign in or connect an account
with either service, PopcornPact communicates with their API on your
behalf, governed by the authorization you grant. Review
Plex's
and
Trakt's
own privacy policies for how they handle your data.
-
Your own media server: if you connect a personal Plex,
Emby, or Jellyfin server, PopcornPact talks directly to that server
using the address and token you provided.
-
Google AdMob: the free version of PopcornPact shows
ads, served by Google AdMob. These are non-personalized — we don't use
Apple's Tracking Transparency framework or your device's advertising
identifier, and don't share your activity in the app with Google for
cross-app tracking. AdMob may still process basic technical
information (like your IP address) needed to serve and measure ads.
Review
Google's ads policy
for details.
-
Sentry (crash reporting): if PopcornPact crashes or
hits an unexpected error, technical diagnostic information (a stack
trace, device model, OS version) is sent to Sentry to help us fix it.
This never includes your password, tokens, or the contents of your
lists or matches.
Beyond what's listed above, PopcornPact does not use third-party
analytics. We don't sell your data to anyone, ever.
Data storage and security
Your data is stored on PopcornPact's own server infrastructure, not a
third-party cloud data broker. We take reasonable steps to protect it, but
as with any online service, no method of storage or transmission is 100%
secure.
Your choices
-
You can clear your watch, seen, or pass history at any time from the
app's Profile screen, including optionally clearing the corresponding
Plex or Trakt watchlist/history.
-
You can disconnect a linked Plex, Trakt, or personal media server
account at any time.
-
You can delete your account and associated data at any time from the
app's Profile screen, or by contacting us at the email address below.
Children's privacy
PopcornPact is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly
collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above.
Continued use of PopcornPact after a change means you accept the updated
policy.
